Four highest covid rates in England all on Teesside

The highest coronavirus infection rates in the country are all on Teesside – but cases are beginning to fall.

It’s the first time the four borough’s have seen a drop in cases week-on-week in months.

Infection rates had been soaring in recent weeks, but the latest data from Public Health England show a more positive picture.

The figures, which are from the week ending July 22, are unlikely to take into account the effect of ‘freedom day.’

All restrictions were lifted on July 19, and it was predicted that rates are likely to go back up in the coming weeks.

It is unclear why infection rates fell in the week ending July 22, but it could be due to more people getting their second dose of the vaccine, or a signal that the region has reached its peak.

Redcar & Cleveland continues to have the highest rate of coronavirus infections country with 1,547 new cases in the seven days to July 22 – the equivalent of 1,128.0 per 100,000 people.

But this figure is down from 1,421.8 in the previous week.

Middlesbrough has the second highest rate, down from 1,281.0 to 1,045.5, with 1,474 new cases.

In further encouraging news, Middlesbrough Council tweeted on Monday that the rate has fallen further to 855.

Stockton is third in the list, down from 1,075.3 to 946.6, with 1,868 new cases.

Next is Hartlepool, which has the lowest rate on Teesside down from 1080.5 to 852.0 and 798 new cases.

Darlington is 11th on the list with a rate of 732.2.

The figures take into account the number of people who have tested positive for the virus in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

Data for the most recent four days (July 23-26) has been excluded as it is incomplete.

Below are the coronavirus infection rates for every local authority area in England.
